Our new area project in Hampshire began in March. We are thrilled that the local communities and churches have really embraced the initiative and are partnering with us to bring joy and companionship to more isolated care home residents across Hampshire. People might think that older people in care homes can’t be lonely in a communal environment, but there’s a huge difference between being surrounded by others and having meaningful connections.
In fact, research shows that older care home residents are twice as likely to feel severely lonely as older people living in the community. Our befrienders are making a huge difference to residents’ lives and wellbeing through their weekly visits. Care home staff have told us that the visits are particularly helping to bring joy, confidence and a sense of calmness to the residents.
Our craft-based projects have also really taken off in the local communities, with many local people involved in the Cards of Kindness project and helping to make gifts and knitted items. We are also building up a library of resources through our Pictures of Joy initiative which can be used by volunteers, care home staff and families to aid reminiscence and stimulate conversation. In addition we have volunteers helping with flower posies and gardening activities and we are developing intergenerational links in care homes through sessions of sharing songs, stories and skills.
